Real Oviedo has become the first team to lose its place in La Liga this season, after Girona’s 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano on Matchday 35 mathematically ended any chance of survival for the Asturian side.

Rayo Vallecano managed to hold Girona to a draw, with the latter occupying the 17th spot in the table — the final safe position. That result left Oviedo stuck at the bottom, 20th place, with 29 points from 35 matches. The gap to safety is 10 points with only three games remaining, meaning Oviedo can no longer catch up.

The club from Oviedo returned to Spain’s top flight this season for the first time since the 2000/2001 campaign. Unfortunately, they will head straight back down to the Segunda División after just one year.
With just nine points still available, the insurmountable deficit seals their fate as the first relegated side of the 2025/26 La Liga season.
